Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Incumbent must be familiar with washing machine operations, washing formulas, classification of linens, temperature control and with the general receiving and shipping of clean and soiled linens to the wards in the medical center.
  • The incumbent must be able to recognize and sort different fabrics and colors by type and have some general familiarity with laundry equipment operations.
  • Must be able to do simple math calculations and be able to read and write.
  • Incumbent must be computer literate and have the knowledge of electronics as the operational controls of all washing machines, dryers and other laundry equipment is electronic in nature.
  • The incumbent works independently and will be able to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions to complete assigned duties. Incumbent must make on the spot decisions concerning laundry operations and the operations of laundry equipment. Generally, work is simple/complex with repetitive operations and a moderate level of care is required to prevent damage to equipment and linens and injury to oneself and others.
  • Observes the operations of all machines and reports obvious mechanical defects to immediate supervisor. Checks safety devices on all machines to insure their proper operations
  • Incumbent unloads clean linen into trucks at the end of extraction periods and places into distribution lines for delivery to other departments.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness and neatness of the wash room, washing machines and dryers which includes vacuuming, high dusting, using air pressure, pressure washer, wet mopping and damp dusting.
  • In supervisor's absence, assumes responsibilities and authority for the day-to-day operations of the laundry. Adjusts work assignments as needed, assuring that equipment remains in full operation and that production schedules are met.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent is in a physically demanding production environment that requires continual pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, bending, stooping and reaching for hours at a time. These factors are encountered daily in the regular operations of handling clean and soiled linen. Weight of the linen handled varies from 0 to 75 pounds from both the processing and delivery areas. Moves heavy carts of clean linen and soiled linens throughout the Medical Center.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent works indoors in adequately lighted, heated, or ventilated areas. Due to the nature of laundry facilities, may be exposed to loud noises, high humidity and heat. Exposed to minor cuts, bruises, skin irritations from harsh chemicals, malodors, contagion, and possible infection. Uses good judgment in the loading of laundry equipment to prevent overloading. Applies washing formulas to certain types of material. Adheres to all fire and safety precautions to prevent accidents from occurring. Subjection to continuous standing, walking, stretching and stooping and heavy muscular efforts such as lifting bundles weighing over 50 pounds and pulling linen from tumblers and washers extractors.
